One week until the latest Worldwide Developers Conference kicks off and I’d usually be excited for what’s to come. But this year I am struggling to raise any enthusiasm for it. The community - for community, think ‘people I follow on Mastodon’ - seems split this year. Where once it was mass excitement, now it’s a mix of excitement and people frustrated/miffed/raging about Apple’s increasingly bad behaviour.
My wishes then?
A very general wish, I know. Stop fighting things like the Digital Markets Act (DMA) so hard and in such an obviously awful way. Instead, try embracing making your platforms more open for all localities to enjoy! Be more developer-friendly, both with app review and with listening to the repeated complaints developers have about your tools. Stop donating money to known fascist, LGBTQ-hating people while also selling products promoting how much you love LGBTQ people. It’s…weird, Apple. Weird.
It’s not going to happen, at least not in a way that I will be happy with. I just have to accept that Apple’s SwiftData isn’t one I am likely to want to use. Thankfully, the folks over at Point Free are showing us how it should be done. I think this is the closest we’ll get to what I would like. My wish; that Apple throws money and resources at Point Free and gets them to make SharingGRDB a first party library!
I really hope that Apple can get back the excitement factor over the next 12 months, but without some big changes I am sceptical.
Much like some of Apple’s recent endeavours, I’ve half-assed this list. Soz about that.
